Always owned dogs grew up with alsations who are amazing. Eventually owned a rotti who grew with family life and children . Needs keeping in check and regular exercise but give much more back .most loving breed I know just oozes love . Will give it's life for owner and household. My biggest problem was other people who totally misunderstanding this breed . Neighbours have everything from terriers to poodles who have bitten but never a rotti. Shepherd. Cane corso or staffie or boxer . People need to get there facts right . Amazing breed but if you don't put structure in place you are to blame

I love the idea of the English Mastiff, sounds like the perfect dog for me, protective, not overly active, short coat….but the drool, I just wouldn’t e able to handle the drool. Any suggestions on a breed with all the above traits, but without the drool?

I think the German Shepherd is perfect for me. I have a female German Shepherd guide dog. I’ve had her for four years now and I absolutely love her. I always knew that when my vision got bad enough that I needed a guide dog that it would be a German Shepherd. Unfortunately, most of the schools are not using them anymore.

I dont think I've seen you cover the sharplaninatz. Honestly, that's hands down the best dog I've had. Very independent, but bonded to the family, fiercely protected the property and all animals and people.(had to grab her before ripping off some trespassers arms off, but she kept us safe). It's been hard to replace her since she was shot by trespassers (4:45 am i think they shot her after she wouldnt let them leave hours after coming through. When they were ready to leavethey just shot her). I can't find many breeders, and so far only males are remotely affordable. For us, females seem to be a better fit. I live in a forest with north American wolves, bears, and panthers. My sharplaninatz took the lead and we didn't have those predators around anymore. Now, my great Pyrenees/Anatolian shepherd won't do her job. The Korean jindo is about 14 and can't. The cattahoula/lab retrievers are being rehomed because of their sibling rivalry and prey drive (began attacking small animals within a week of me breaking my leg). They were raised with these animals so they are done here. I had a German shepherd, but she just never "blossomed" and one afternoon she vanished. She wasn't protective, which I thought was odd. She was only about 8 months or so, and I guess someone "took" her. I know it isn't just the breed that makes the dog, but I definitely feel partial to the ones I've loved. Australian shepherd Labrador mix was very protective and loyal. The st bernard/Pyrenees was the best babysitter and very careful with children and small animals. The sharplaninatz put herself between us and any threat and when she determined that wasn't stopping /devouring the threat she attacked. I watched her drag a Rottweiler uphill by its back leg. She drug it away from the proterty and came back. She had different approaches to different scenarios. Men with chainsaws, she didn't tolerate. The ups showing up at 10:30 pm reaching out with a package, she lunged. I could get her under control, but she was always looking out for us.

You need a savings account and pet medical insurance if you get a King Cavalier Spaniel. They are so sweet but they have too many genetic medical problems. I guess they are good if you don't want a dog who will live very long.

I have a Doberman that was abandoned and found his way to my house in rural Oklahoma. He was not the easiest dog I have had. I had to learn some tricks to deal with his uncontrolled energy. But he has turned out to be very intelligent and gentle and loving. I have no fenced yard, so he can go where he pleases. There have been no incidents of him causing trouble or harm to any of the neighbors. People are often afraid of him when they see him just because he is a Doberman and looks intimidating, but he is very gentle. I don't think I would ever go purposely and get another Doberman. They are challenging in some ways, but they are devoted and very intelligent.

I love my mastiffs! All of them. Each has its own personality almost human ! They are like children in 20 years of keeping them I can say they are awesome but not for everyone. They need lots of attention and positive enforcement of rules. On flip side not much walking is needed the best if you have a yard where they can exercise as little or as much as they want. I wouldn`t say they are slow witted, they just don`t care for training , they know very well what you expect of them but always question. Mastiffs need time to make up their mind about doing something, usually just look at you with expression: " And why would I want to do that?" And if they are against or not in the mood of something they will not participate, just lay down and resist. My first Mastiff had always the worst results in training school , but when last exam came he was first to finish obstacle trail and won the entire competition. Everyone was stunned that Maxi took all trophies and ribbons. Something about competing sparked his interest and motivated him to win. He also broke podium that collapsed under his weight.

A mongrel dog breed , only recognized in usa and italy recently too. A farm utility breed man made in the 80s to look like an extinct breed of war dog. Nowadays used for guarding or companionship.

I love that so many have so much experience training different breeds of dog. I do not. My GSD from years back was so easy to train into a good citizen I suppose I could have taken her about anywhere and her sweet personality truly shined. And now to lesser things having read many comments of others. This may be pedantic, okay, it is, really, IT IS but there's no Brittany Spaniel breed except in the history books. The name was changed in the 70s or 80s, if memory serves, because they didn't exhibit the hunting behavior of spaniels. So I'm told. I've never owned one but I was impressed with the hunting capabilities of those I've seen in the field or at trial. My favorite breed is generally the one that lays his chin on my leg but I miss my German Shepherd Dog hard! Now, since I'm on this pedantic roll what's a Canadian goose? Any goose hatched in Canada. There is a species, with sub species, of Brants who name is the Canada Goose. There are 12-14 people who will now know the man behind my nom de plume if they happen to read this farcical comment. May they keep my secret. Peace

We have a male 3yo mixed Chihuahua of 5kg we got 1.5years ago. At home he's very chill but barks at EVERY stranger dog when I take him for a walk. I try to socialize him the best I can but he will actually try to bite the other dog when I let him approach one. He will also let no stranger pet him ( took 3months for my mother to touch him, seeing her once every weekend) I have a friend who has a very calm ~20kg neutered male dog, he really gets along with him. Everytime he sees him they play for an hour, he'll try hump him all along but my friend's dog is ok with it and will let him know when it's really annoying. My chi is very cool once he gets to know the other dogs. So, having always wanted a big dog I took interest in the mastiff breeds. Do you think it would be safe for the chi ? What kind of training will the mastiff need ? And what are the mastiff breeds that get along with smaller pets?

While we had had shepherd-pit mixes before, we stumbled into a Norwegian Elkhound puppy that picked my Mom as her person. My Mom was frail and elderly, and when I read up on the breed I expected a disaster. My Dad and I lobbied for a Lab or a Golden. Mom ended up with a sequence of elkhound bitches that proved to be highly adaptable to her activity level, and now I have a nine-year-old elkhound dog who, while he is a handful, is the sweetest disposition dog I've ever had. Do I recommend a Norwegian Elkhound as someone's first dog? Honestly, no. I've been lucky and have had some exceptional elkhounds, but they are a challenge if you haven't hd experience with the breed. Highly intelligent, independent, heavy shedding, did I mention independent? with a bit of stubborn streak, and with strong herding and prey instincts, but if you know how to handle them they can be the best dogs in the world in the right home. The breeder told me that Aanika, a retired champion who had whelped one litter before being retired from the breeding program before she came into service with my Mom, was a "once-in-a-lifetime" dog. Aani and I were at the kennel (Aani was in the whelping rom as the midwoof) when her great-great grand-pup litter came along, and that day the breeder chose a little male puppy for me, the previously mentioned sweetest I've ever had, Baldurdash! He came home with me at four months old and settled in with Aani and me. I've been lucky, I've never had a dog that wasn't a once-in-a-lifetime dog, and if you think about it, every dog deserves that description because every dog is as individual a its human companion.

My 5 year old intact male Doberman wants to meet every person he sees, and play with every dog he sees. He has had two fights with two different dogs and both of those dogs were the aggressor. Dobermans aren't aggressive. They are protective. If he is not provoked, he will not attack.

Says he loves the breed , then goes on like no one else should be able to have them , and on top of him always making out no one should have them he allowed the sun newspaper to use his posts to slate the breed making out they are the next xl bully ! Far better trainers on UA-cam that have this breed and as well as pointing out your responsibility to the dog and other people when you own one he shows you just what the effort with them can get you , an amazing caring loyal friend and companion, a work dog , an agility dog , and so so many other things ! Being so unbalanced to scare people of the breed leaves them as the next target when they don’t deserve it . ( American standard dog training ) think that’s the fella you need .

Doberman intelligence is different. It's not just vocabulary size. My dobie quite literally assessed situations and decided if she was going to follow commands - and it also depends on who was giving the commands. She manipulated the absolute hell out of the weak willed people in our house. She had no qualms using violence to protect her pack and our territory. Amazing dogs, but in no way a fit for everyone.

I disagree with dog on dog aggression. My first Doberman was 125 lbs and was attacked by a Jack Russell and a Boxer. He was taught to ignore other dogs and was a gentle boy.
